About Us

Intelligent Transportation (INTR) Laboratory is a cutting-edge research facility within the Intelligent Transportation Domain at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). The laboratory specializes in the modeling of multimodal and complex transportation systems and infrastructure, applying state-of-the-art technologies (AI, smart sensing, edge computing, etc.) as well as methdologies (data science, operations research, systems engineering) to improve safety, resilience, efficiency and cost-effectiveness. INTR fosters a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment, where students have the opportunity to work alongside leading academics, peers, and industry experts from diverse disciplines such as transportation engineering, civil engineering, artificial intelligence, operations research, etc. Moreover, the laboratory embraces a strong emphasis on industry-relevant research and technology transfer. The team work closely with many govenmental and industrial partners, including USDOT, NJDOT, NJ Transit, MTA, PATH, Guangzhou Metro, Shenzhen Metro, Shenzhen Eborail Technology, etc. By adopting a model that integrates academic inquiry with practical applications, it offers students hands-on experiences in product development, testing, and market deployment, preparing them for careers at the intersection of academia, industry, and technological innovation.

Dr. Bai Yun is the head of the INTR Laboratory, where she leads a team of researchers in the field of transportation infrastructure management, data driven anlaytics, risk analysis, and network modeling and optimization. A graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) with a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Dr. Bai’s academic journey began at Zhejiang University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Before joining NJIT, Dr. Bai served as an Assistant Research Professor at Rutgers University and an Assistant Professor at HKUST(GZ) from 2014 to 2025, where she delved into the management and optimization of transportation infrastructure systems. Her research career includes a postdoctoral fellowship at UIUC from 2013 to 2014 and an internship as an operations research analyst at Caterpillar Inc. in 2012.
